What are the published Wisconsin requirements for points and repeat violations?

Wisconsin uses a demerit-point system for driving violations. If you build up 12 or more demerit points within 12 months, your license is suspended. The length of the suspension scales with how many points you have; more than 30 points results in a 1-year suspension. To reinstate your license, you'll need to serve out the suspension, pay a $60 standard driver's license reinstatement fee, and file an SR-22 (a certificate of financial responsibility, kept in effect for 3 years) through your insurer. This SR-22 requirement is unusual for a points-based suspension, but Wisconsin requires it. Depending on how many points you had, you may also be required to complete driver-improvement counseling. Unlike a Failure to Pay Forfeiture suspension, an occupational license is available while you're serving a points suspension. A point-reduction class can also remove 3 points from your record (available once every 3 years), which can help keep you under the 12-point threshold. Separately, if you're classified as a Habitual Traffic Offender (4 major violations, or 12 moving violation convictions, within 5 years), that carries its own 5-year revocation and is handled differently from a standard points suspension.
