Washington Points Suspension and License Reinstatement Information
Washington publishes rules for some suspensions involving accumulated points or repeat violations. The applicable period and any next step depend on the state's record, so use this page as general source-backed information and confirm against the current official record.

What are the published Washington requirements for points and repeat violations?
Washington does not use a numeric point system. Instead, suspensions are based on how many violations you've been convicted of. For adult drivers, about 6 moving violations in 12 months triggers a suspension. Unlike most states with points-based suspensions, Washington requires you to carry an SR-22 (a certificate of financial responsibility filed by your insurer) for 3 years if you have this type of suspension. To reinstate, you need to: serve out the suspension period, file the SR-22 for 3 years through your insurer, complete an approved safe-driving course (an online course is acceptable), and pay the $75 reissue fee. Completing the safe-driving course early can end the suspension ahead of schedule, but this option is only available once every 5 years. An occupational or restricted license is available if you need to drive during the suspension. Note: if you're classified as a Habitual Traffic Offender (3 or more serious traffic violations within 5 years, leading to a 5-year revocation), that is a separate, more serious status with its own process, not covered here.
