New Jersey License Suspension for Tickets, Court Holds, or Fines
New Jersey may receive a hold from a court or another issuing authority after an unresolved ticket, missed court date, or unpaid obligation. The issuing authority and the licensing agency can have separate steps, so the exact notice and current official record control.

What are the published New Jersey requirements for tickets, court dates, and fines?
In New Jersey, failing to appear (FTA) in court leads to a court-ordered license suspension, plus a failure-to-pay (FTP) surcharge that stays in effect indefinitely until it's paid.
Important warning: an FTA in New Jersey often comes with an outstanding bench warrant. Before you appear at the court in person, check with that court (or through NJMCDirect.com) to find out whether a warrant is outstanding. Appearing without first resolving the warrant can result in arrest.
To get your license reinstated:
1. Pay the underlying ticket at the municipal court (this can be done through NJMCdirect.com), or appear in person once any warrant is cleared or a payment plan is in place.
2. The court will notify the MVC, or you can bring your payment receipt to the MVC yourself.
3. Pay the $100 MVC restoration fee.
If a failure-to-pay surcharge is also part of your suspension, restoring your license requires a 5% down payment on the surcharge balance, plus the $100 restoration fee, with the rest of the surcharge covered by a payment plan.
New Jersey has no hardship or work license, so you cannot legally drive at all while your license is suspended.
