Maine License Suspension for Tickets, Court Holds, or Fines
Maine may receive a hold from a court or another issuing authority after an unresolved ticket, missed court date, or unpaid obligation. The issuing authority and the licensing agency can have separate steps, so the exact notice and current official record control.
General information only. This page does not review your record, decide which category applies, or select a form or provider.
What are the published Maine requirements for tickets, court dates, and fines?
Maine has not reformed its failure to appear (FTA) law. Under 29-A MRS §2608, failing to appear in court, failing to answer, or failing to pay a fine results in a license suspension.
Here is how to reinstate your license:
1. Pay the underlying fine to the court.
2. The court clerk then rescinds the suspension and notifies the Secretary of State directly, so you do not need to track down or deliver any paperwork yourself.
3. Once notified, the Secretary of State's office clears the suspension after you pay the $50 reinstatement fee under 29-A §2486. This $50 cap applies flatly to all court-ordered suspensions, including OUI (operating under the influence) suspensions.
You can pay online (with a $5 processing fee), by phone, or at a branch office. No SR-22 is required for this type of suspension. Partial payments are allowed in $50 increments.
