Indiana Points Suspension and License Reinstatement Information
Indiana publishes rules for some suspensions involving accumulated points or repeat violations. The applicable period and any next step depend on the state's record, so use this page as general source-backed information and confirm against the current official record.
General information only. This page does not review your record, decide which category applies, or select a form or provider.
What are the published Indiana requirements for points and repeat violations?
Indiana uses a numeric point system, as described in the Indiana Driver's Manual, Chapter 5. If you build up 20 or more points within 24 months, your license is suspended. The length of the suspension depends on how many points you have: around 20 points leads to about a 1-month suspension, around 24 points leads to about a 3-month suspension, and 42 or more points leads to about a 12-month suspension.
Here is the path to reinstatement:
1. Serve out the suspension period.
2. Pay the $100 BMV reinstatement fee (the "other" fee tier).
3. If you had more than 2 citations within a single 12-month window, the BMV may also require you to complete a BMV-approved Driver Safety Program (DSP), which can be done online, before you're reinstated.
No SR-22 filing is required for a suspension based purely on points.
Specialized Driving Privileges are not available through the BMV during a points-based suspension. This kind of hardship license would require a separate Indiana court petition instead.
Note: being classified as a Habitual Traffic Violator (HTV) is a separate matter, carrying its own 10-year revocation (or a lifetime revocation if you have 2 OWI convictions), and is not covered here.
